  • To this intelligent, emotional, friendly progressive on almost all social, environmental, and economic justice issues, this group of people feels like home. After I found it, I realized that I've been a Unitarian Universalist all my adult life, I just didn't know it.

I appreciate its acceptance of all people, its democratic process, and its work on justice issues.

We all know that virtually all of the work in a group is done by a handful of people, but that's not true of this group--there are more than forty people actively engaged in its various ministries!

  • I've been a member of Starr King Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church since 2005, when I moved to Hayward. (I've been a UU all my life.) I was welcomed and encouraged by the clergy and other congregants from the start, though it still took me a few months to feel "at home," as I felt a bit shy at first.

Starr King is a place where you can have any creed or theology, pretty much, and find that it's respected and that YOU are respected, as a person of value on a unique and intentional journey. If you are Christian, or atheist, or agnostic, or earth-centered, or without a chosen religious/spiritual "category," Starr King is a good place to be. Shared beliefs tend to center around stewardship of the self, the community, the society and the planet, trying to live ethically and compassionately, seeking to promote equity and fairness in our own lives, and for others, too.

The congregation and the church has changed and grown over the ten years I've been attending, in many good ways. There are numerous worthwhile ways to be involved outside of Sunday morning services, and it's also a good place for kids (though I say this as someone who doesn't have kids).

  • I think this is a great place for a liberal-minded person looking for a community of like-minded churchgoers for whom social justice is a big priority. You won't be forced to profess faith in any creed, but instead will be encouraged to seek out your own personal truths. The location is great since it backs to the San Lorenzo Creek and has its own parking lot. The church was refurbished not too long ago so has all the comforts one would expect such as a kitchen area, outdoor tables, meeting rooms, and multiple bathrooms. There are always nice treats after service which often include home-made pies and cookies because several members like to bake. Certainly worth coming in for a visit! :-)

  • Inspiring sermons that engage the imagination, promote thought and consciousness, and support us in this evolving world we share, one with another.
